Earth Day
Earth Day was first, observed on April 22, 1970, when an estimated 20 million people nationwide attended the inaugural event. Senator Gaylord Nelson promoted Earth Day, calling upon stu-
dents to fight for environmental causes and oppose envi ronmental degradation with the samе energy that they displayed in opposing the Vietnam War.
ln July 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established in response to ihe growing public demand for cleaner water, air, and land - its mission to protect the environment and public health. Earth Day also was the precursor of the largest grassroots environmental movement in U.S. history and the impetus for national legislation such as the Clean Air and Clean Water acts. By the twentieth anniversary of that event, тоге than 200 million people in 141 countries had participated in Earth Day celebrations. At the turn of the twenty-first century, the EPA was announcing new requirements for improving air quality in national parks and wilderness areas and establishing regulations requiring тоге than 90 percent cleaner heavy-duty highway diesel engines and fuel.
Now Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe. Through the combined efforts of the U.S. government, grass- roots organizations, and citizens like you, what started as a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment.
Earth Day 2009, April 22, will mark the beginning of tlm Green Generation Campaign! This two-year initiave will culminate with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. With negotiations for а new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action ansi civic participation, to defend the Green Generation's core principles:
А сагbon-free future based оn reneweal energy that will end our common depenclency on fossil fuels, including coal.
An individual's commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.
Creation of а new green ecology that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and
transforms the global education system into a green one.
