Originally called the Kiev City Museum of Antiques and Art, the founders set out to put together a collection of pieces representative of Ukrainian fine art.
Ranging from medieval icons to portraits of military and church leaders during Cossack times, some depicting caricatures of Mamay. Present time famous artist works included those of Taras Shevchenko, Ilya Yefimovich Repin, Vladimir Borovikovsky, Vasily Andreevich Tropinin, Mykola Pimonenko, Mikhail Vrubel, Nikolai Ge, and Oleksandr Murashko among many others.
After World War I, the museum also served as the Museum of History. One of the memorable expositions displayed an old trophy tank, which was lent by the Triple Entente to the White Army.
After World War H the museum changed its name and exposition, and returned to what it's known now, presenting art. The collection began to grow, with Ukrainian art coming from all areas of Ukraine like Galicia. The directors obtained Ukrainian art from Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as Ukrainian artists living abroad in Europe and America. However, during Stalin's repression, this activity was seized, and a big part of the collection was dispersed and hidden.
During Ukrainian independence, the museum reached a status of international recognition. For the first time, its collections traveled outside of the country and were exhibited in The Netherlands, Canada, France, Denmark, and Croatia.
The Hudson River Museum, located in Trevor Park in Yonkers, New York, is the largest museum in Westchester County. The Yonkers Museum, founded in 1919 at City Hall, became the Hudson River Museum in 1948. While often seen as an art museum due to the extensive collection of works from the Hudson River school, the museum also features exhibits on the history, science and heritage of the region.
The museum was founded in 1919 as the Yonkers Museum and contained a number of mineral specimens housed in Yonkers City Hall and was known also as the Yonkers Museum of Science and the Arts prior to being named the Hudson River Museum. The museum used its namesake, the Hudson River, as the core of its 75th anniversary celebration in 1994. Also central to its history is the Glenview Mansion, a National Register site built in 1877, once the home of one John Bond Trevor and the home of the museum for 45 years from 1929 till now forms a large part of the Hudson River Museum. It contains six period rooms displaying furniture and decor from that era.
The museum is the home of the Andrus Planetarium, the only public planetarium; in Westchester County. The museum first added a planetarium in 1969 to celebrate the beginning of the Space Age and the increasing interest in space and that was just one part of the museum's expansion throughout the 1960s which included the construction of expanded and more modern facilities to house its collections. The planetarium and its laser shows are credited with driving the museum's 30% increase in attendance in the early 1990s due to the appeal of the shows to all ages.
The museum's diversity is part of what led to its citation as one of the most unusual cultural facilities by the New York State Council on the Arts in 1972. It has sought to maintain this diversity and relevance amidst changes in leadership and focus throughout its history. The diversity is also apparent in the museum's 23-acre site.
The Tate is an institution that houses the United Kingdom's national collection of British Art, and International Modern and Contemporary Art. It is a network of four art museums. It is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Tate is used as the operating name for the corporate body which was established by the Museums and Galleries Act 1992 as The Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery.
The gallery was founded in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art. When its role was changed to include the national collection of Modern Art as well as the national collection of British art, it was renamed the Tate Gallery after Henry Tate, who had laid the foundations for the collection. The Tate Gallery was housed in the current building occupied by Tate Britain which is situated in Millbank, London. In 2000, the Tate Gallery transformed itself into the current-day Tate, which consists of a federation of four museums: 'fate Britain which displays the collection of British art from 1500 to the present day; Tate Modern which is also in London, houses the Tate's collection of British and International Modern and Contemporary Art from 1900 to the present day. Tate Liverpool, in Liverpool has the same purpose as Tate Modern but on a smaller scale, and Tate St Ives displays Modern and Contemporary Art by artists who have connections with the area. All four museums share the Tate
Collection. One of the Tate's most publicised art events is the awarding of the annual Turner Prize, which takes place at Tate Britain.
Genoa, Italy emerged as a major artistic center toward the middle of the 16th century, sparked by the seal lord Andrea Doris's political leadership and ready patronage, and the artist Perino del Yaga's arrival from Rome in 1527. The technically masterful, even boldly experimental, graphic art in "Genoa: Drawings And Prints, 1580-1800" illustrates Genoa's growth by the early 17th century into an important regional artistic school. Some of the drawings were made as independent works of art (as for instance ones by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione) characterized by rich painterliness and dramatic content. Many sheets are preparatory drawings, which eloquently
describe the Genoese tradition of illusionistic fresco painting that unfolded almost in its entirety within the splendid interiors of the new churches and palazzi. In addition to better-known artists (Luca Cambiaso, Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Bernardo Strozzi) "Genoa: Drawings And Prints, 1530-1800" includes less-studied Genoese artists such as Carlo Alberto Baratta, Giulio Benso, - all of whom significantly influenced other artists both in Genoa and elsewhere in Italy.
