Mount Cook consists of three summits lying slightly south and east of the main divide, the Low Peak, Middle Peak and High Peak, with the Tasman Glacier to the east and the Hooker Glacier to the west.
Sat nearest March 17 Maori canoes take to the water manned by rowers in traditional dress in what is one of the most spectacular annual displays of Maori culture. The Regatta has been held annually for more than 120 years, and as well as the boat racing features traditional singing, dancing and food.
The International Antarctic Centre is a little more than a cool tourist attraction. Sitting by the airport, this giant complex is the base not only for New Zealand's Antarctic research missions, but for their American and Italian counterparts too. Seventy percent of visitors to the Antarctic leave from Christchurch, so the centre is really as close as you can get without actually being there.
