5 Great Hobbies For Teens
Hobbies with wide teenage appeal
In this overly high tech world that most teens are plugged into, the idea of great hobbies has taken a back seat to text messaging and surfing the web. Still, it is vital that teenagers have a pastime that allows them to "unplug" for a while and focus on more than just socializing. The importance of a hobby is demonstrated in the statistics that show teens with a great hobby are less likely to get into trouble than teens who don't have such a passionate pursuit in their lives. Follows are just five of the really great hobbies available for teenagers.
Collecting
Collecting is a great hobby since it can involve collecting just about anything that appeals to the teen. While stamps and coins may not be exciting enough for today's teens; postcards, bookmarks, even posters or T-shirts can be great ideas for collections. The trick is to let your teens imagination take over and lead the way.
Many teenagers enjoy collecting items that relate to places they have visited, such as mugs from zoos and amusement parks.
Some teens express themselves through the odd things that they collect,, such as old hat, pins or vintage bottle openers. Trips to yard sales and flea markets to find these interesting items can turn into family affairs and create lifelong memories.
Collecting give teens a sense of purpose and a focus for their energies that might otherwise be turned towards inappropriate activities.
Writing
Writing stories or poems can be a great hobby for teens. Often teens need a channel for expressing themselves without the fear of judgment. Writing in a diary or secret notebook helps teenagers gain a sense of privacy that is important for their development. Writing also increased the language skills of teens, which will help them better communicate later in life. Creativity has recently been shown to be an important skill for young people to obtain and is also positively affected by writting.
Writing is also a very inexpensive hobby to have. Pens and pencils and paper at a minimum are needed although as interest increases, the teens will want to use a word processing program on the computer. Fortuanately most computers come with this software or a slightly older version can be purchased for about $45. The older versions arc just as good as the newer ones for writing. The newer versions just contain more bells and whistles that are nice for professionals or even for college age students but are not really necessary for writing as a hobby.
Building
By building, I am referring to models, woodworking, metalworking and just about anything else that is working with your hands and results in a finished product from raw materials. Again, building is one of the five great hobbies because it has wide appeal to all teens. Whether it is airplane models or birdhouses, most teenagers can find something interesting and enjoyable to build. Building helps teens learn to concentrate and gives them a great sense of accomplish when they create something from next to nothing.
Sewing, knitting, crochet and other crafts could also be lumped under the building category. Knitting has experience an increase in popularity lately, as had sewing. It is good for our young people to learn how to make their own goods. Not only is it a step towards self-sufficiency, it is also a potentially marketable skill.
In fact, all of the five great hobbies for teens can turn into lucrative businesses
down the line.
Music/Playing An Instrument
What kid hasn't at one time or another dreamed of being a music star? Music is a wonderful influence in the life of a young. It promotes creativity, self-expression, and self-confidence. Although music as a hobby can end up costing quite a bit of money, there are stores that offer used instruments and equipment as well as rentals. Renting an instrument is a good place to start out, before your teen has made up their mind about what instrument they want to play. However, once that decision is made, purchasing a new or second-hand instrument, outright is a more economical option.
Photography
In this day and age, photography can mean anything from taking pictures with an old 35mm and self-developing them to taking digital photographs which are then 'touched-up' with Photoshop. I also lump filmmaking along with photography since it's all about getting the right shot and capturing the moment.
With the invention of digital cameras, taking up photography as a hobby has never been easier or less expensive. A fairly decent digital camera (one good enough to start on) can be purchased for as little as $60 and usually come with editing software for the computer. As your teen becomes more interested, more advanced software and equipment can be added.
Obviously there are many more hobbies that may appeal to your teen. The trick is to let them figure it out through trial and error. As their parent, it is your job to encourage, support and participate if asked. By sharing your teens interests, even if that mean doing nothing more than listening to them explain what it's all about, you' ll strengthen the bond between you which also goes a long way to keeping your child safe, happy and healthy. Over time you' ll see that great hobbies help make great teens turn out to be even greater adults.
