The range of festivals in substance and subject matter is as broad as their geographic distribution, from à winter sports carnival in Minnesota and rattlesnake round-up in Oklahoma to the Mardi Gras in Louisiana and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. There is something of interest for everyone — the sport,s fan, the music lover, the antique collector, the rodeo fan, the gourmet cook, and the balloonist. There are many hot-air balloon festivals, but for ballooning fans worldwide, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the centre. For nine days in October, the New Mexico skies are full of vibrant colors as hundreds of hot-air balloons lift of from Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park. On crisp early mornings, nothing equals the sight of «Mass Ascension» as the hot-air balloons gracefully leave the ground to take their places in the deep blue desert sky. There is something for everyone to enjoy: special shaped balloons that twinkle ш à night sky. But ballooning in the USA has not always attracted thousands of people. Like аll sports it had a beginning. On January 9, 1793 à large crowd gathered outside the Walnut Street prison in Philadelphia to watch à balloon launching, which if successful would be the first aerial voyage in the new United States and the New World. For weeks Jean Pierre Blanchard, noted French aeronaut, had advertised this event. He has sold tickets at five dollsrs per seat and $2 for standing room. The excitement was so great that almost everyone in the city was there. А number of people wanted to go up with Blanchard„but he refused to share this first with anyone. Minutes before the scheduled balloon 1аппсЬ the crowd outside the prison became excited, when a carriage arrived and President George Washington stepped down. Не, along и 11Ь the French ambassador wished Blanchard success. This was to be Blanchard's forty-fifih flight. He made his initial flight in France in 1784. Over two centuries have passed since this historic flight in the United States. This 1ез1жа1 is only one оГ many, celebrated by people in the United States. All are based upon people' s traditions, historical backgrounds, and special interests, and each one has à unique story about its beginning ш this country.
