The day that changed!ny life and made me realize I better go back to school and get my college education, was s day that altered my life forever.
I was working in a warelu!use for a popular gourn!et store called Citerella. in Ma»- hattan. It was not one of the best, jol!s I' ve ever had, bui, at the time it had paid the bills. The hours were long, the work sweaty and dirty, but at least it was a Monday through Friday schedule and I could enjoy the weekends off. The warehouse itself was a dark, windowless faculty with not a decent ventilation system. The warehouse had a certain smell oi' n!ildew to it, which took me son!etin!e to shake th!! smell of even when I was off and on my way honae. If only the wealthy people of tire llpper East Side wbo i!appened to be the clientele oi' ibis store knew about the conditions of this warehouse, I anl suI'e they would not !v!nit to shop thpl"p.
There was sn additional condition that existed that I failed to me»tiou and that was the unceasing rodent problem. In the beginning of my employme!!t at, the warehouse it took some getting accustonled to seeing the occasional mouse scurrying around or stuck on a glue trap wiggling for its lii'e. As time went on it just became part uf the day, a!nl I started to not even notice the n!ice. I r!id look for!vaid to Tuse<i!ly and Friday's though, that was the day that the exterminator would come to pick up all the glue traps with the dead mice <m them. That I thought was probablv onc his nastiest jobs.
